A.A.

Alcoholics Anonymous’ basic ideas and interpretations are not always the way I see it. For instance I don’t agree about there being a unique disease called Alcoholism. Personally I think A.A. has many of the characteristics of many religions as well as many spiritual and esoteric paths.

It doesn’t really matter because A.A. has a chair for everyone, and if you leave your chair stays empty till hopefully you make it back. And if you don’t make it back then to tell you the truth, I am not sure what they do with it.

Basically what you have is an esoteric gymnasium where everyone can come and work on themselves according to their desire and their level of understanding.

The A.A. methodology is both complex and simple. There are a few attitudes that when acted upon can change a person in a most wonderful way.

For me the core attitude is the willingness to do whatever it takes to not drink or use.

So it doesn’t really matter if A.A. is a religion or not, or if there is such a thing as Alcoholism. When one is willing to embrace the principals of A.A. then this methodology is much like the Sanskrit concept of Sadhana.

I should like at this moment to express my most heartfelt gratitude to Alcoholics Anonymous and all the other 12-Step programs for the great foundation of my life: that nothing comes before sobriety (sobriety date April 9, 1980).
